Configuring the relative odometer

The Relative odometer sensor calculates an object’s mileage from the number of pulses transmitted by its terminal. It is suitable for equipment that counts pulses until a data packet is sent and then starts a new count.
PILOT adds together the values received from the terminal and converts them into kilometers. The calculation uses the Pulses per kilometer coefficient.
Configure the sensor separately for each object because the number of pulses per kilometer depends on the vehicle and installed equipment.
Before configuring the sensor, make sure that:
  • the terminal transmits the number of pulses in a separate field
  • each value contains the pulses counted since the previous data packet was sent
  • the number of pulses corresponding to one kilometer is known
If the terminal transmits a continuously increasing total counter, the Relative odometer sensor with the Pulse type is not suitable for processing these data.
 

Adding the sensor

1. Add a new sensor to the object
2. In Function, select Relative odometer
3. Make sure that Type is set to Pulse
4. In Name, enter a clear sensor name, such as Relative odometer
5. In Field, select the parameter in which the terminal transmits the number of pulses
6. If necessary, complete Conversion formula. Leave this field empty if the terminal already transmits the number of pulses in the required format
7. In Pulses per kilometer, enter the number of pulses corresponding to one kilometer. If you do not know this coefficient, determine it using a test trip

8. Enable Filter values if required
9. Click Save
After you save the sensor, PILOT starts adding together the values from the selected field and calculating the mileage using the specified number of pulses per kilometer.
 

Calculating mileage from pulses

A pulse is a signal that the terminal receives from connected equipment while the vehicle is moving. The farther the vehicle travels, the more pulses the terminal records.
Each data packet contains the number of pulses counted since the previous packet was sent. PILOT adds these values together for the selected period and calculates the mileage using the following formula:
Mileage, km = Total number of pulses ÷ Pulses per kilometer
For example, the sensor is configured for 1,000 pulses per kilometer. During a trip, the terminal transmits three values: 200, 350, and 450.
First, PILOT adds the values together: 200 + 350 + 450 = 1,000 pulses
It then calculates the mileage: 1,000 ÷ 1,000 = 1 km
The value in Pulses per kilometer must be greater than zero. An accurate coefficient helps PILOT calculate the mileage more precisely.
 

Determining the number of pulses per kilometer

If the coefficient is unknown, determine it using a test trip:
1. Record the initial mileage and pulse-counter readings
2. Drive a known distance. For a more accurate result, use a sufficiently long route, such as 10 kilometers
3. Determine the total number of pulses recorded during the trip
4. Divide the number of pulses by the distance traveled: Pulses per kilometer = Number of pulses ÷ Distance, km
For example, the terminal records 12,500 pulses over 10 kilometers: 12,500 ÷ 10 = 1,250 pulses per kilometer
Enter 1,250 in Pulses per kilometer.
After calibration, complete another test trip and compare the calculated mileage with the actual distance. If the values differ, adjust the coefficient.
 

Verifying the calculation

Compare the calculated mileage with the vehicle’s actual mileage over a test route.
If the values differ:
  • check that the correct pulse field is selected
  • make sure the terminal starts a new count after sending each data packet
  • adjust Pulses per Kilometer
  • check that PILOT received all data packets
If PILOT does not receive some of the packets, the calculated mileage may be lower than the actual mileage.
